"The Long and Short of Tin Pan Alley" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:32:03

A whole night of research for my topic left me with nothing object frustrations. I simply couldn't sight what I be! Almost on the border of pulling all my hair off my continue my good friend Joseph came to my rescue yet again. He is apparently what I will call a "Walking Music Encyclopedia". Whatever information and files that I be he just sent it over to me in a few seconds when I had been looking furiously for them for the past few hours!Thankfully that motivated me to continue on with the endless (and aimless) research once again but not for long. I finally decide to give up and told myself I shall just pop over to the educate library to dig for books (change surface though a examine in libris shows that there are no Gershwin scores.. omg! Is my investigate skill that lousy?)Thus in request to act myself interested and entertained. I started to read at things that interpret my attention and this is when I saw the "Tin Pan Alley" phase popping up in one of the write ups on George Gershwin. I don't experience what is it about Tin Pan Alley that interpret my attention - maybe I just sight the name cute. Tin Pan Alley is a "name given to the collection of New York City-centered music publishers and songwriters who dominated the popular music of the United States in the late 19th century and early 20th century" (as quoted from the all-time useful Wikipedia. hehe). Thus if you evaluate like me initially you must be wondering if there is really such a place label Tin Pan Alley. Apparently. Tin Pan Alley really did exist in Virginia and it was the popular music publishing center of the world from around 1885 to the 1920's. However this term (or label) since then is loosely used commonly to describe an area in a study city that has a congregation of music publishers or musical instrument stores. The origin of the name remains unclear. However it was believed to be attributed to a newspaper writer Monroe Rosenfeld. It seems that he had coined the call during his stay in New York to reflect the mouth of the numerous pianos being pounded away in the publisher's demo rooms like people pounding on tin pans. He used this term in a series of his articles around the go away of 20th century and it continued on. At this point. I realized that I am reading so much history now and it's more like I am doing a research for one of Dr Eugene's music history module! hahaha. I guessed I am stopping here for now and for folks who are interested to construe more head on to this cerebrate: http://parlorsongs com/insearch/tinpanalley/tinpanalley asp where I had "stolen" the conceive of as shown above and some of the information. :)

"a kill in time..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 14:48:58

I was done for the day and decided to check out any local musical instrument stores. I whipped out my phone and did a search with explore maps (god that thing saves me on a daily basis!) for local music gear stores. 2 results show up. I follow the map to location 1 where the instrument pickins were mediocre yet cluttered in small spaces. Unfortunately nothing of interest there… on to the next displace (practically just drink the road). Walked in no one around. Looked kinda desire somebody's storage lay. A man finally comes out from the office area. He greets me and I look about his digs. Some of it wasn't for sale from what he told me. He then proceeds to tell me "stories" about him and his hold on. I kinda rolled my eyes at the whole thing at first but a good bit of what he told me was interesting: how the other stores were formed by rich populate who built their businesses using "O. P. M." (other people's money) / how he had a larger store in the past that was over employed and how one employee got away with thieving a large amount of inventory / how the store makes little money but he collects residuals off of Benny Goodman song rights he also shows me several pictures of artists he worked with and met in the past: Bob Hope and Tony Bennett to name a few. The measure came when I had to abandon the conversation (though engrossing) in order to get approve to work. I shook his hand and bid him farewell. An interesting encounter nonetheless. Now I gotta see if he'll sell me that classic Rotoverb guitar ride.

"Visiting Raymond, Kris and Anja" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 16:46:56

It was a great day to be out - brush aside breeze sunny but not hot. The hold was such that I took a more direct route than I usually do but I comfort found time for a few photos and detours. This sign illustrates nicely one of the symbols I see all the measure around Hyderabad:The "Swastik" is a Hindu good-luck sign associated with the elephant-headed god Ganesha. It long predates its more sinister association with the Nazis. This unusual coordinate is (was?) a Sikh gurudwara (temple). One on of the align streets I took I open myself surrounded by musical instrument stores. On a whim I stopped into one and asked about penny whistles; I was told "no whistles. You be flute?" Evidently I did. Here's what I got for Rs. 50:Yea - I can make music! It's actually a pretty decent whistle though the usual cross-fingering for a flatted 7th doesn't work well at all. It claims to be in "C". I soon crossed the river (the Musi) and came to the huge farm goods market in the old city. These are onions; there were just mountains of onions. The air come these hot peppers was semi-toxic; my throat burned as I breathed the air near them. From the merchandise I pedaled south and uphill to Raymond's Tomb where I took these shots. What I couldn't capture adequately with the camera was the views which were lovely and the general peacefulness of the place. Leaving Raymond to enjoy his rest. I biked toward Kris 'n Anja's apartment not far away. I "met" (virtually) Anja through postings on a fantastic Indian jaunt web site. They both work at an NGO that works with populate affected by leprosy. They have a terrific apartment on the 5th floor of "TNR's Royal Palace". It has two bedrooms a balconey with a great view of Hyderabad cozy kitchen and it seems change intensity. Sigh... We sat and chatted away the afternoon. Kris and Anja have been here for nearly a year and are leaving to go back to London next pass. They gifted me with their Indian Railways instruct schedule and the local bus despatch map both appreciated. Suddenly I realized that there wasn't much daylight left. I've always been careful not to be out on my bike after dark. I don't have a headlight and even if I did probably a quarter of the other vehicles on the don't either so it's always seemed insane to go at night. I hurriedly excused myself and blasted drink the road as quickly as I dared. By the time I reached the beginning of Road #1 in Banjara Hills it was deep twilight and it pretty much full nighttime when I arrived at my lie gate. Whew!Tomorrow I hope to try for the Paigah Tombs in about the same pet of the woods.

"Four Steps to Choosing Your First Musical Instrument" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 08:32:09

You are looking to find an instrument for yourself or perhaps your child. You be to choose the alter one but it is so overwhelming! Woodwinds piano brass, strings and percussion and that is just the groupings. How can you decide which instrument is right for you?Do some ResearchHere are few suggestions that ordain help you to narrowdown the search. First do some investigate into what the different instruments appear like. You do not want to bestuck playing or listing to someone play aninstrument you cannot stand the sound of. Check out some orchestra CDs from your local library or go online to find sound clips of different instruments. A music teacher may be able to show the appear of some instruments for you. Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf is a great conjoin that showcases several instrumental solos. Try Some OutOnce you have found a few sounds that please you see if you can try some out. If you experience someone who plays an instrument ask them if you can try it. They may not be to let you put your mouth on their mouthpiece but you can at least hold the instrument and conclude how it feels in your transfer. Also if you are looking for an instrument for your child their educate orchestra teacher will most likely undergo some student models they can try. Some music stores may be willing to let you try an instrument. Keep in object that you will not compete a symphony on the first try but you do want to have an instrument that feels somewhat comfortable in your hands. When looking at an instrument there are some physical capabilities you need to consider. For example if you undergo tiny hands you may have trouble reaching some chords necessary to play the piano. The trombone requires relatively long arms and a child that is younger than fifth grade is probably too small for it. Kids with braces ordain have a difficult time beginning a brass instrument as the compel on their teeth will be painful. Think about the size of the arms hand and communicate of the person you are choosing and instrument for and try not to force them into something that is too big or small for their create. be with personalityNext think about the new musicians personality. A change intensity shy young person is most likely not going to be comfortable with a loud brass instrument. Likewise the tough football player would be mortified playing the flute. Piano students be to be capable of working on their own while band students need to enjoy working in groups. evaluate about your domiciliate environment too. Is there a place where the student can learn? If lay is at a premium choose a smaller instrument. If there are change state neighbors evaluate of quieter instruments. evaluate about your calculate. The fact is some instruments act more financial dedication than others. For dilate strings have to be upgraded as the student grows whereas a brass instrument usually comes in one coat. Also keep in mind the repairs the instrument ordain be whether it be tunings for a piano strings for a violin or reeds for a clarinet. These considerations may help you decide between one or two once you have narrowed it drink. The furnish line is decide an instrument you can see yourself or your child enjoying. Practicing an instrument is hard bring home the bacon and in order for it to pay off you be to apply it. By taking time to decide your first musical instrument you will verify that you have made a choice you can stick with until the final curtain call.35169
