Ămile Zola's La BĂȘte humaine. I borrowed this book in September and finally finished it last week. Since it was for research purposes. I couldn't apply it as a leisurely read due to all the stop-and-write-post-it-notes. As the title. 'La BĂȘte humaine,' suggests the novel is a thriller that examines "the human beast." A combination of murder jealousy suicide and other mysterious deaths. Ămile Zola reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock - both have a way of portraying and revealing human vices and vulnerabilities.. in the most disturbing way. I usually end my apprise summaries with a favorite passage but I don't have one for La BĂȘte Humaine mostly because the content and language was all very graphic and disconcerting. It's a praise for Zola's ability to articulate all that is best left buried in the human object. Kurt Vonnegut's Timequake. You've probably heard of Slaughterhouse-Five which is like everywhere but I have yet to construe it.. some measure in the near future. I picked Timequake as my first Vonnegut read because it was on the "staff recommends" table and while I was browsing about a lady came searching for it. I thought if someone is actually taking the time to look for the schedule it might not be all that bad. And so I read 63 (quick) chapters of lines desire. "In the beginning there was absolutely nothing and I mean nothing... But nothing implies something just as up implies drink and sweet implies sour as man implies woman and drunk implies alter and happy implies sad. I hate to tell you this friends and neighbors but we are teensy-weensy implications in an enormous implication," and. "The woman I love there does not experience I love her. You want to talk about poker faces? When her eyes meet exploit she might as well be looking at a cantaloupe!" hahah.. hilarious. Vonnegut knows the art of language - the art of humanity. A final quote:Xanthippe thought her husband. Socrates was a fool. Aunt Raye thought Uncle Alex was a cozen. Mother thought Father was a fool. My wife thinks I'm a fool. I'm wild again beguiled again a whimpering simpering child again. Bewitched bothered and bewildered am I. And finally,Amy Hempel's The Collected Stories. A collection of short stories from life's muses (e g. dogs mothers friends road trips etc.) that are individually pleasant to read. I think good stories are good because of their endings. And by good endings. I don't mean happy endings but their appropriately ameliorate final sentences - endings that couldn't be better stated. Here are.
